The New York Times describes the Splendid Palas as "an Art Nouveau-flavoured wedding cake of a hotel, located only two blocks from the clock tower. Built in 1908, the hotel is double-domed, white as icing and grandly down-at-heel, with four tiers of balconied rooms and creaky crimson shutters."

| The Splendid Palas Hotel is a magnificent building with silvery domes and red shutters, on the largest of the Princes Islands, facing the Marmara on one side and the city of Istanbul on the other. It retains nostalgic echoes of the past in the unique, peaceful and relaxing island atmosphere of Büyükada, far removed from the stress and hustle of the city. ‘An historic hotel on the Princes Islands’ |

| + | The hotel was fabulous - not like the generic hotels where you could be in any city in any country. It was unique. A great example of old fashioned kindness, courtesy and cleanliness. The breakfasts were great and the pool and its surroundings beautiful. I would urge anyone to go. Its position is brilliant, it is in the best spot on the island. Watching the comings and goings of boats, people, faytons etc. was an entertainment in itself. The hotel should produce a booklet about the hotel and its history. The photos in the atrium were wonderful. Just a great experience. | |
| Don't expect 5 star extras (like towelling dressing gowns, slippers etc.) but do expect kindness, helpfulness and great service. You will receive it. |

| They take the idea of 'faded grandeur' a little too far. While clean it is desperately in need of a facelift without losing character and the staff, particularly the receptionist, was utterly miserable. The pool was ice cold and the pool area unkempt with broken tiles, and unstaffed. |

| + | We stayed here as part of a wonderful first trip to Istanbul. The hotel is like something out of an Agatha Christie novel. Our room was at the top, right at the front and was large, clean and comfortable. The bathroom had been added in a recent refurb, but all worked fine. The price is not cheap, but reasonable and feels like a real part of the history of this small, refined island. Breakfast was rather excellent I thought, although my wife felt some fresh fruit would have been a welcome addition. Recommended for a very enjoyable stay. | |

| We really appreciate our staying in the splendid hotel but we didn't like the cheap and little bathroom, and the short menu at the restaurant. |
